Volunteer Opportunities with United Way of Mesa County

For GenNexters to BabyBoomers, high school students to retirees, volunteering at UWMC is a great way to build relationships, share unique talents, make valuable community connections, have fun, and make friends! There’s room for everyone. Like to plan parties? You might enjoy the Taste of the Grand Valley planning committee. Got a creative bend? Check out the Marketing Committee. Want to make the connection between dollars raised and real change in someone’s life? Become a member of an Allocation Panel. These are just a few of the meaningful volunteer opportunities found at United Way of Mesa County. Read more below!

Allocation Panels:

As a member of one of the nine panels, you will be trained to read and understand a grant application, evaluate a program’s effectiveness, efficiency, and ability to deliver results, make site visits as a group to see the program in action and talk with staff and clients, and ultimately make funding recommendations to the United Way Board of Directors. If you are interested in this unique volunteer opportunity, click here (link to application form in PDF) to download the application form, or contact Julie Hinkson, Director of Community Funding and Agency Relations, juliehinkson@acsol.net.

Campaign Team:

The Campaign Team serves as the steering committee for the campaign; you provide support to the United Way staff and Campaign Co-chairs. You will provide the structure for the campaign and be the eyes and ears in the community. You will provide leadership from which our campaign will draw its strength. You provide energy for the campaign while you set the pace and serve as an example to your peers. For more information about joining the campaign team, contact Mary Jo Diemer, Office Administrator at maryjodiemer@acsol.net.

Planning Committee for Home Loan Taste of the Grand Valley:

This group begins meeting regularly in August to plan and produce this annual “signature event” – a family food festival featuring some 50 booths at Two Rivers Convention Center that raises over $30,000 annually for UWMC. As a committee member, you will help identify sponsors and exhibitors, develop marketing ideas and help shape this fun event now in its 7th year. Contact Laura at

laurastafford@acsol.net for more information.

Parade Brigade:

Join a fun group of volunteers who walk on behalf of UWMC in seasonal parades across the valley: Palisade Peach Festival Parade (August 18, 2008) and Fruita Fall Festival Parade (September 29, 2008);). Contact Estrella Woods maryjodiemer@acsol.net for more information.

Sub-Committees of the Board of Directors:

Marketing Committee:
This committee provides guidance to the staff for development of community support and commitment for United Way of Mesa County through a systematic communications program that both speaks to and listens to the community. Meetings scheduled as needed. Contact Mary Jo Diemer maryjodiemer@acsol.net for more information.

Finance Committee:
This sub-committee assists staff in refining financial policies, provides guidance on financial matters, and periodically (as needed) serves as an audit committee, recruiting and reviewing an independent accountant who will provide annual audit and Form 990 tax return services. Contact Julie at juliehinkson@acsol.net for more information.

Planned Giving Sub-Committee:
This group will assist staff in developing strategies to promote planned gifts (current and deferred) to grow the UWMC endowment fund. Contact Julie at juliehinkson@acsol.net for more information.
