Agency Requirements for Funding Application:

United Way of Mesa County funds programs sponsored by eligible 501(c)(3) organizations that meet health or human service needs in Mesa County. We do not fund programs that are: primarily religious or political in nature; primarily concerned with the arts; related to formal education; intended for lobbying to influence legislative or regulatory changes at any level of government.

Community dollars are allocated through an annual grant application process. Citizen volunteers make fund distribution recommendations (see panel allocation process to the right). The Board of Directors of United Way of Mesa County annually determines final fund distribution. Organizations receiving United Way funds are accountable for responsible use of those funds and must file periodic reports measuring their service impact.

Priority Areas of Need:

In addition to responding to emergency and basic needs, at least 40% of allocable dollars may be targeted toward priority areas of health and human service needs as established by a community assessment. Currently, those needs are identified as:

  • Substance Abuse: Education and prevention programs for youth; residential and outpatient programs for individuals suffering from drug or alcohol addiction.
  • Affordable Housing: Programs offering assistance in securing or retaining low and moderate income housing, or providing resources to assist persons moving toward financial and personal self-sufficiency.
  • Affordable Health Care: Low and no-cost medical, dental, and mental health care for children.
